Student Behavioral Health Incentive Program (SBHIP) – Marin

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been heightened awareness of and concern for youth/ adolescent mental health. Anxiety, stress, depression, sadness, and suicidal ideation have increased among youth throughout and following the pandemic, which poses significant concerns for children’s socio-emotional wellbeing. To address these concerns, the state of California is committed to investing in programs and resources to improve youth mental health. The Students Behavioral Health Incentive Program (SBHIP) originated in CA State Assembly Bill 122: Section 5961.3; the intention of this legislation is to provide additional avenues to address behavioral health needs in California’s Public K-12 schools while also laying the foundation for systemic changes in schools across the state to help improve youth mental health outcomes. Through conducting stakeholder surveys + interviews, analyzing secondary data sources, and hosting focus groups with school community members, the SHS Research Team will conduct a Needs Assessment to inform a youth behavioral health Program Plan for the Marin County Office of Education in December of 2022. Our overarching goal is to use evidence-based research to recommend an intervention that will most effectively and equitably utilize state allocated funds to create systemic, sustainable improvements in Marin County’s student behavioral health services.
